This Saturday the Nuclear Abolition Week has finished successfully. The event took place between 6 and 13 July, and a large number of campaigners from all around the world took to the streets, met with policymakers, organised public meetings and more to show their government that they expect full-fledged support for a treaty banning nuclear weapons.
Previously there was a Nuclear Abolition Day, but from this year the event has become a week of action. This change was because the problem must be solved urgently. We can not keep dwelling on time and leave open the possibility that another catastrophe occurs. You need to act NOW!
From the Human Security Network in Latin America and the Caribbean(SEHLAC) we have launched a call forpaperwhose topic is «Current perspectives on nuclear disarmament». The reason for this call is to be part of the actions thatit has been carried out globally to support the total abolition of nuclear weapons.
Latin America and the Caribbean is the first nuclear-weapon-free zone since the signing of the Treaty of Tlatelolco. This was an important fact because we were a precursor to the ban the most terrible arms in the region. Moreover, this fact served as an example and inspiration for other regions to create other nuclear-free zones.
Because of that, Latin America and the Caribbean has be positioned in a particular situation around the issue of nuclear disarmament. However, we believe that there is a lack of academic studies that address the issue in the countries of the region (in comparison with the rest of the world).
For this reason the launch of this call is designed to promote and disseminate knowledge in the region on different perspectives that can be addressedin the study of nuclear disarmament. This call has been disseminated in different media, in universities, research institutes, between students and teachers. In turn, there was a great spread through social networks and has also been promoted by the Ican campaign.
Other actions that Sehlac has be doing supporting the Nuclear week of Actions:
SEHLAC has informed the most important public acts (in Spanish and English) according the week of actions. Besides it was done an important work insocial media: twitter/ facebook to spread relevant information about the actions that were promoted to spread the formal petition for the abolition of nuclear weapons. Also SEHLAC has encouraged people to share their photographs showing their shadow according the ICAN campaign, through the social media.
