Trinidad y Tobago: Un empresario asesinado en Coffes Street

Police are describing the murder of business manager Quadir George in San Fernando yesterday morning as a hit. Limers on Coffee Street had to scamper for safety when two gunmen opened fire on George, manager of Landing Strip Restaurant and Bar, at 3 am yesterday, killing him on the spot.

Two of his employees, Kadisha Vincent, 18, and an unindentified man, who were among four occupants seated in his Nissan Almera waiting for him outside the establishment, were injured. George, 30, of Geranium Crescent, Pleasantville, had just closed the business place and was sitting on a table outside, speaking with another man, when two gunmen, who were lurking in the dark across the street, approached and opened fire. The father of three was shot several times and died on the spot.

Several shots were also fired at the vehicle, in which the four occupants— two waitresses, including Vincent, a disc jockey, of Jamadar Street, San Fernando, who also doubled as George’s driver, and the yet to be identified man—were seated. The gunmen were seen running down Coffee Street, then disappearing on a street at the side of Belgroves Funeral Home.

Police from the Homicide and CSI divisions recovered 18 spent shells from the scene, including seven from the car. DMO Dr Ramgoolam also visited the scene and pronounced George dead. Vincent and the unidentified man were taken to San Fernando General Hospital, where they remain warded.

Police said they had no motive for the killing, as George was not known to be involved in any criminal activities. Several family members gathered at the scene suggested that it could have been professional jealously as his newly-opened bar was doing well. His mother Urla George said she did not know why anyone would want to kill her son.

“The crime situation in this country is very terrible…It is only when it comes home to you, you understand how bad it really is,” she said. The distraught woman said she left her son at home sleeping around 4 pm that evening. “He would have gone to work in the night, and next thing I know he is dead.”
